The new Devon Garden Machinery building represents a modern, single storey commercial and retail building, visually prominent on approach to Torbay.

Developed for an established local business enterprise on their existing site, the new ‘flagship’ building is open to the public, and provides amongst other functions a purpose built facility to showcase agricultural machinery. The building footprint is a substantial 1400m2 on plan incorporating a partial mezzanine floor.  The building incorporates 35m single span portal frames with lightweight metal cladding and feature full height glazed corner upon approach. Supporting local commerce, the building team included a regional Architect and small local Contractor, and was delivered successfully to Client specification.

Culvert Design

Detailed design of works to construct a new channel by a school and improve localised drainage within the school playground.

The proposed culvert was to be an open U-section concrete culvert used to capture exceedance flows from the overtopping of the River and was to be located upstream of the proposed school.

There was a requirement to undertake an assessment on the design of an existing inlet channel at detailed design stage to see if a trash screen was required and this screen assessment was undertaken in compliance with the Ciria guidance – C786. A FRAP (Flood Risk Activity Permit) was also prepared.

Engineering solutions for new homes

True Consulting delivered suitably engineered, high quality housing in the Mid Devon town of Willand.

We reviewed in detail ground conditions and surrounding trees both existing and proposed in order to provide economical yet functional foundation solutions taking into account root protection zones, volume change potential, tree influence and bearing capacities.

We also worked closely with the architect to engineer external levels and coordinate part M compliant approaches with tanking kept to a minimum.

An adoptable estate road/highway was designed and a diversion of a public storm water sewer was delivered with the drainage network design all to South West Waters adoptable standards.

Our client was very happy with the flexible service provided and hands on approach adopted by True Consulting, together with cost effectiveness of the scheme.

Industrial refit

True Consulting were integral in the extension and refit of an  industrial building for a prominent organisation in Bampton, Devon.

This project presented multiple challenges, not least overcoming the topography and the site being inside a disused quarry and next to a river, a long way below the level of the site.

Once completed, the available commercial floor space at ground level was doubled
in size and the building also featured a new mezzanine first floor.

Bespoke coastal home

We were delighted to lead on the superstructure and substructure design of a bespoke coastal home in the highly desirable village of Croyde, north Devon.

The design required a masonry ground floor, with a reinforced concrete transfer slab, with a steel framed first floor sitting off the transfer slab.

The brief for the steel framed mono-pitched roof was to be a cantilevered canopy with a tailored curved edge detail.

To conduct the design of the proposed structure, TRUE consulting engineers utilised Finite Element Analysis (FEA) modelling to design the transfer slab to distribute the frame loads from above to the masonry panels below.

The frame above was designed to support the roof loads and resist any horizontal forces arising from wind loads and nominal eccentricities of the steel structure.

Additionally, after communicating with the architect we were able to fulfil extra aspects of the brief; this included redesigning the transfer slab to accommodate a lower recessed threshold for the balcony.
